Dashboard

Closing Widgets

Minimize

Opening Stack and Fan

Restarting Dock Settings

If you accidentally (or deliberately) put up hundreds of items into your Dock, it will waste your time to drop them out one by one. The fastest way to restore your original Dock is to delete your com.apple.dock.plist and relogin to your account.

Attach Item to Mail with Dock

If you press Command-Option while dragging item on Dock to your new mail pane, that particular will be attached to the mail.

27 Menulets

All of these default menubar items are located inside Mac HD ? System ? Library ? CoreServices ? Menu Extras.

Combine Exposé and Space

While in Space mode, you still can Exposé selected Space.

Moving All Windows to Other Space

If you see a crossed-out pencil icon at the bottom-left corner of your Finder, it means that particular folder is set to be Read-Only.

Combining Selections

In most of Applications, especially Cocoa Applications, you can use Command to combine several separated blocks of selection. This also can be done while selecting blocks of text.

Announce Time

You could set your Mac to announce the time for you every period of time. It can be done inside Date & Time Preferences Pane.. with checkbox labelled Announce the time.

Get Current Date and Time

date

Above command can be used inside Terminal to get current date and time set inside your Mac.

date -jnu

Above command returns current date and time also, but it’s according to UTC time.

Quick Jump to Settings Pane

Pressing Option along with one of brightness keys will bring you to Display Preferences Panewhile pressing it along with one of volume adjustment keys will take you to Sound Preferences Pane.

Black Frame

Maybe you haven’t noticed it, there is 1-2 milimeters black frame around your display. There is nothing to do about it, it’s normal.

Mute Volume Adjustment

Holding Shift while increasing/decreasing volume will shut the tapping sound.

Quick Accessing Applications Folder

When you select your Finder, pressing Command-Shift-A will do the trick.

Auto Replace Equation

If you highlight an equation, e.g. 5*15+20.5, and then press Command-Shift-8, your Mac will automatically replace it the correct answer, i.e. 95.5 in that particular example. Note: Script Editor will be launched.

Rotate Through Calculator Mode

Clicking Calculator’s Zoom button won’t enlarge the view pane. Instead, it will rotate your Calculator’s mode: Basic, Scientific and Programmer.

Quick Word Definition

Hovering a word and pressing keystrokes Command-Control-D will have a definition window popped up. Holding Command-Control after, and hovering over another word will display the definition of that word.

Adjust Outline Thickness for Extract Shape

Curly Quote in TextEdit

Go to Edit ? Substitutions and tick Smart Quotes. You will get your curly quotes in your TextEdit document.

TextEdit Searching

Maybe you haven’t noticed this, pressing Option while opening Dialog Box: Find will change the button to In Selection. So the results will only be limited to the selection.

Taking Snapshot with Grab

Unlike usual screen capture, the pointer can be shown when you capture your screen with Grab. Pointer type can be chosen inside Grab Preferences.

Your Mac Serial Number

Go to Apple ? About This Mac and click on the version number (the one below big Mac OS X title) twice. You will see your Mac serial number.

Built-In Image Effects

If you happen to go inside Developer ? Applications ? Graphic Tools, you will see an Application called Core Image Fun House which inside got a lot of ready-to-use image effects.

If Administrator Forgets Password

In this case, Mac OS X DVD Installer will be needed. Restart your Mac while pressing C on boot up. After that, choose Installer ? Reset Password. Follow all the steps and hopefully you can get new password.

Huge Icons

defaults write com.apple.finder DesktopViewOptions -dict IconSize -integer 256
killall Finder

Command lines above will make your Desktop icons very big (256×256). You can use command lines below to reset it to medium size (64×64).

defaults write com.apple.finder DesktopViewOptions -dict IconSize -integer 64
killall Finder

Rename Trash

There is a good news: you can edit the display name of your Trash folder. Follow these steps:

Go inside folder: System ? Library ? CoreServices

Right-click on Dock and Choose Show Package Contents

Open Contents ? Resources ? English.lproj ? InfoPlist.strings

Change the value of variable named TrashName

Here is the bad news, it’s a Read-Only file.

Change Dock’s Menu List

In the same folder as before, you will see another file named DockMenus.strings. All the naming of Dock menus are inside this file. If you want to change your Dock’s menu naming, changing the right value of the variables will do the trick.

Translucent Menu Bar

Go to your Desktop & Screen Saver Preferences Pane under Desktop section, tick checkbox labelled Translucent Menu Bar to get your menu bar translucent.

Mail Recipients

Mail can help you do the auto-completion when you want to send message out. In case you don’t want the auto-completion to be done for certain address, you can go under Mail: Window ? Previous Recipients and remove contacts from the list.

Quick Forward in Mail

Hold Option while double-clicking the message will do you the trick.

Blind Carbon Copy

In your default Mail settings, you won’t see this address field, but it’s exist. Turn it on by using keystrokes Command-Option-B or by enabling View ? Bcc Address Field.

Prioritize Mail

Click on the button left to your Subject Field and enable Priority Field. Now, you can send your Mail with three priority: Low, Normal and High Priority.

Random Signatures

You can have more than one signature for your Mail. And the fun thing is, you can set your Mail to select one of your signatures collection randomly. You can do so:

Go to Mail: Mail ? Preferences… ? Signatures

Find Option Box labelled Choose Signature

Choose At Random

Make your Mac Delivers Speech

When you’re too lazy to read document by yourself, select some portions of the text, chooseEdit ? Speech ? Start Speaking and your Mac will read the text for you.

Quick Shut Down

The last trick, quick shut down which is used almost every day: Command-Control-Option-Eject.

How many of them you’ve known? How many of them you haven’t noticed before?

With increasing number of screen savers being coded and produced, it’s time consuming for you to choose the best that fits your need. Hopefully, I’ve filtered down to Ten Mac screen savers that will make you droll (and they’re all free).

Enjoy!

MovingPhotos 3D Screen Saver

[Download Here]

An absolutely beautiful screen saver. This screen saver gives you the freedom on choosing your pictures folder and then works on it to create animation of photos flying around, constructing a virtual building. This is a must have screen saver.

Screen Savers for Internet

Time Machine Screen Saver

[Download Here]

This Time Machine screen saver combines the Time Machine space time warp and your trustworthy RSS reader, making it so much of convenience (and awesomeness) for reading your RSS while also running your screen saver.

[Download Here]

This screen saver can load your favorite photos from Flickr, shuffle them, add customizable transition effects and display them as your screen saver. It’s worth a try. Really.

There are too many Mac applications readily available which, either directly or indirectly, confuse most Mac users, making them hard to find the best application. On the other side, most application developers also feel really itch-scratching to think of fresh and unique application.

To my surprise, some developers have amazed me with their applications that came out different than others, such as application to set different Docks on different Spaces, to set different wallpaper on different Spaces, to bring you to cleaning room, and many other creative yet useful functionality.

There are many of them, but here I will mention some that I am currently using.

DockSpaces, Dock Extensions

Using Dock Spaces, you can create up to 10 distinct Docks which are ready to be triggered and changed. If you’re currently not used to using one of Mac application launchers, you would love this Dock expansion application.

For further customization, you would be able to attach every distinct Dock into different Spaces.

Deeper, Reveal Hidden Preferences

Recalling the days of tweaking, Mac geeks come out with killer Terminal tweaks, some are very useful, some are plain amazing. However, many are afraid of corrupting their system files during tweaking and choose not to tweak their Macs.

But with Deeper, you can personalize your Mac with simple GUI and get the most out of your Mac.

Camouflage, Desktop Icons Hiding

Most Mac users are troubled by endless clutters on their Desktop, like me, the more I tried to clean up my Desktop, the messier my Desktop became.

With Camouflage, we can easily hide/show our Desktop icons. Basically, it moves all of your icons under the wallpaper.

Hyperspaces, Different Wallpapers on Different Spaces

With Hyperspace, you can customize every bit of your Spaces with different desktop pictures, naming on each space or even hotkeys. And it’s fairly easy to do that.

Hyperspace is a an application with $12.95 price tag but without paying any single pennies, you have the chance to use trial version, which enables you to play around with customization up to 2 Spaces.

Omnidea Rulers, Ruler for Everyone

Having problem with measuring certain part of the screen, often for me to use built-inMac OS X snapshot ruler which is quite troublesome (and a single careless will create accidental snap).

But now, to easily take your Desktop’s coordinate, Rulers comes in handy. And Rulers even empowered with color picker.

MacLoc, Logout without Closing Applications

With a very different behavior than usual Mac log out, MacLoc won’t close all of your applications while logging you out from the system. With this, you will be able to protect your valuable data whenever you want to walk out.

Keyboard Cleaner, Clean Your MacBook with No Hesitation

Whenever it’s time to clean our laptop, it’s require that we shut down our Mac to avoid unwanted keystrokes being triggered. Come to think of this, it’s such a hassle to do this all the time.

Keyboard Cleaner should help you clean out all the troubles: it will lock you out the screen, enabling you to clean out your MacBook without worrying on accidentally triggering undesired keystrokes; Only Command-Q is accepted, i.e. to bring you out of the cleaning state.

OmniDazzle, Mouse Trail Plugins

Having mouse track without trails, I feel a bit losing to those Windows users. In the case of using large display, mouse trail will also be a great help to find your mouse.

Folks at OmniGroup made an impressive plugin for your mouse which enables your mouse to have trails, such as Pixie Dust, Footprints and Flashlight. But be careful, excessive use of this will eat up your productivity.

Tunes has often been carved deep inside our mind as one of the coolest music player that we have on our Mac. Apart from playing music, many useful features also can be added to your iTunes experience. From the music shuffling to music sharing over network, from tweaking rating system to setting music duration, will be discussed in this article as well as some other cool features.

Shuffling Songs

Though I know that everyone should have known about this feature, but it’s always good to start from the basic (in case, some of you don’t know).

By clicking on the second button of iTunes lower-left corner (with twisted arrows icon), we will be able to turn on/off Shuffling Mode for iTunes. But, it’s also recommended to turn on Repeat Mode by clicking on icon next to it (3rd button) so that iTunes will keep shuffling even after it has finished playing the last song.

However, shuffling of movies isn’t available for iTunes, but there is a workaround for this.

Shuffling Movies

To make iTunes shuffle our movies files, we need to move those files from iTunes Movies Library to iTunes Music Library; simply drag-n-dropping the file to another library won’t work.

Until now, I’ve found only one way to move song to music library:

Open iTunes and control-click on movie that you intend to move

Go inside its Get Info pane

Switch to Options section

Select Music Video as its Media Kind

Item will be automatically moved to Music Library

Don’t close your Get Info Pane first, since we’ve already inside, let me continue with other trick.

Setting Start and Stop Time

Under Get Info ? Options, we can see two boxes labelled Start Time and Stop Time. With these two boxes, we can set the starting and ending point of our song. Using this simple trick, we can also manipulate our play count.

More often than not, we want to shuffle songs of certain genre/artist/album instead of shuffling all of our songs, that’s when songs categorization comes into play to make smaller playlist.

Categorizing Songs

Songs categorization, as the name suggests, will assist us in grouping our songs to the same genre, artist or album. It’s in the form of browser, it can be activated by pressing keystrokes command-b, and by clicking on one of the items we can have a playlist narrow down to that selected category.

Often, we will prefer to keep iTunes Mini Player showing on our Mac rather than the big iTunes browser window hanging around. Pressing on the green button (Zoom Button), we will be able to transform iTunes browser into mini player.

Regarding to this mini player, there are some useful information I want to share here.

Floating Mini Player

Floating, also means keeping on top of other windows, can be enabled inside iTunes Preferences Pane. In details, these are the steps for activating floating mini player:

Open iTunes

Follow this path: Menu Bar ? iTunes ? Preferences…

Go under Advanced tabs

Tick 4th checkbox from bottom that says, ‘Keep MiniPlayer on top of all other windows’

Controlling Mini Player

I found these keyboard shortcuts come in handy when we’re navigating with iTunes Mini Player:

spacebar – Play/Pause

? | ? – Increase/Decrease Volume

? | ? – Change to Next/Previous Song

cmd-opt-? – Mute Sound

cmd-opt-? | cmd-opt-? – Forward/Backward Song

Problem arises when playing Music Videos with Mini Player where a new window will suddenly pop up or even the movie will go to full screen mode. To encounter this, we should in advance set Music Videos’ Playback to be in Artwork Viewer (to be set insideiTunes ? Preferences ? Playback).

Other interesting stuffs on iTunes:

Setting Half-Star Rating

We only need to execute this Terminal command line and all set:
defaults write com.apple.iTunes allow-half-stars -bool TRUE

iTunes Visualizers

Besides iTunes Default Visualizer, there are still many other visualizers we can install to our iTunes, such as Magnetosphere (the previous version of iTunes Default Visualizer), Cubism, and many others.

iTunes Widgets

I’ve browsed some Yahoo! Widgets for iTunes and found these interested:

iTunes MiniRate

iTunes Remote

iTunes Sky

Mickm iTunes Mini Player

If you have stumbled on other interesting iTunes widgets, please let me know.

iTunes in Safe Mode

In case of your iTunes failing after installing additional add-ons, visualizers or plugins, you can press command-option upon opening your iTunes. These key combination will bring your iTunes to Safe Mode, i.e. opening without extra stuffs.

Sharing Music Over Local Network

Last but not least, it’s always good to be able to share music to friends that are connected to our local network. Here are how to do it.

Open iTunes and go to its Preferences

Move to Sharing section

Tick Share my library on local network, select your playlist, and give password protection if necessary

It’s quite straightforward, isn’t it?

As we have seen, many cool features are hidden inside iTunes yet in this article not all of them are discovered. If you have, by any chance, discovered some other stunning features, please share with me and other readers.

Dock Changer Applications

Used to be a hit amongst Mac users, Dock Changer is the famous name for an application that can provide us simple and convenient interface to change our Dock skin.

One from this kind I use is LeopardDocks. Its ease of use makes the world of Dock customization much more wonderful.

Dock Skin

A large collection of Dock skins are available to be downloaded from LeopardDocks.com, but amongst many I like Glossy Black Dock the most, which is uploaded by Daniel Kestler.

The Customization Process

Let’s begin the tweaking process.

Download LeopardDocks and Glossy Dock Skin with the link provided above

Install and launch LeopardDocks

Browse to extracted folder of GlossyBlack.zip

Change your Dock and confirm with admin password

Your Dock skin will be immediately changed

It’s that easy.
